  • Finding Work
  • Operating like a Business

The second half will focus on practical aspects of creating content professionally and efficiently.

  • Tools of the Trade
  • Specializing
  • Shooting Techniques

Storytelling

This course will focus on the soul of every film - the story.   From a documentary film perspective, the topics will include:

  • Observing stories in our everyday life
  • Key elements of a good story
  • Capturing those key elements
  • Delivery of the story to an audience

The Sea to Sky is teeming with remarkable film production talent.  Some of the best will come in to relate their personal approach to the art of storytelling.  Throughout the course, students will shoot and edit their own pieces, to apply the knowledge they’ve aquired as they create a short film.

Film Festival

This course is all about getting out there and getting dirty.  Partnering with the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) students will curate and organize the films, speakers, sponsors, and marketing for one of their themed festival nights during the February Film Festival.  Tom Wright, the Programming Manager, will visit the class in the beginning to explain the specific tasks that the student’s will need to carry out for VIMFF.

Together with my guidance, the students will become immersed in the specialty of event planning for a film festival.  After completing the course, they will come away with a valuable resume addition, increased networking skills, an intimate understanding of event planning, valuable experience of the contractor/client relationship, and accountability for a real world client.

Practicum

This course is designed to put students through every aspect of creating a film for a client.  Using my network within the film industry of the Sea to Sky, students will meet with a representative from Arc’Teryx, MEC or a similar client.  They will storyboard, schedule with athletes, shoot, edit, produce and deliver a finished film to their client.  Not only will they complete the process from start to finish, but they will also begin to create their own net workings in this fast-paced industry.
